    MORE AE TUTORIALS!! (please)

(maybe how to "effectively" animate your hoolanders) [m]

    ... and hooladanders, too ;)
  • Haley · 2 years ago
Awesome. Glad it helped out. Yes, the expression used in this tutorial is great for making wings flap. I will be posting many more tutorials, tips, and ideas for AE... so check back soon!

  • Dakota Cortez · 2 years ago
Haha, that is one amazing motion graphics work. I can't wait to learn how to do that.
  • Muli · 2 years ago
    Nice.

    I agree! More AE tutorials!!!

make some more when you get a chance, very helpful.
  • error · 2 years ago
there is an error that pops, and disables the expression in AE 7 when trying to add -thisComp.layer(”right wing”).rotationY to the right wing
  • Haley · 2 years ago
You need to create that expression on the left wing.. not the right. The expression is referencing the right wings' Y rotation, so if you have the expression on the right wing, after effects will disable the expression because it cannot reference it's own Y rotation.

"On the “left wing” layer create an expression on the Y rotation as well. Except this one will be: -thisComp.layer(”right wing”).rotationY"

    Hope you get it working!
  • error · 2 years ago
that is what I meant, I have it like you do and it gives an syntax error.
  • Haley · 2 years ago
I posted the source file for you to download. I have no clue why you\'re getting an error.. seems to work fine for me! Good luck and let me know if you get it working.
  • also error · 2 years ago
I also get an error after entering the expression on the left wing. Even opening the provided source and simply evaluating the expression fails for some reason :(

Running After Effects 7 pro on a Mac FYI
  • AH! Figured out it · 2 years ago
The problem is that copying the code from the website replaces the quotes with special character 'smart quotes'.

    Bad Quotes:
    -thisComp.layer(”right wing”).rotationY

    Good Quotes:
    -thisComp.layer("right wing").rotationY
  • joey · 2 years ago
hey guys ive tired it aswell and i get a syntax error too, even downloading the source file..so is it alrite to just copy the right wing expression and reverse the expression : -60*Math.sin(15*time) : which gives you the same thing, its just the left wing dosent ref the right..??

    joey
  • mark · 2 years ago
Hey Joey - I just retyped rather than pasting and it worked fine. As long as it refs the proper comp. peace [m]
  • mark · 2 years ago
    PS: More Toots please!!

Two vector sets and counting - and not a thing to wear with them... If I were creative, I could figure it out on my own - but I ain't... so I needs more tootage - pretty please, with depth of field and camera shake on top?? peace all [m]

    hi all.
  • Denis · 2 years ago
Thank you from Moscow, Russia for an interesting lesson. I suppose, Go Media is one of the greatest design studio in the world.
My comment is about several things:

    1. About a syntax error: I just typed all expressions by my self in AE and there were not any errors.

    2. You have a small error in you tutorial: wiggle is correct, not Wiggle (it is important for After Effects)

Anyway, thank you for you job. Best wishes!

i'm having trouble pasting the path from illustrator into after effects. it won't let me paste the path for some reason after i copy it.
  • Kaiyajoy · 2 years ago
Nice tutorial, Can you make more for After Effects PRETTY PLEASE? Thanks a bunch Haley!
  • seth · 2 years ago
    Well done.
I had to animate wings in one of my work and if i saw that tutorial sooner i belive it would make my life much simple.

Who ever want to see more great tutorials should check www.videocopilot.net by Andrew Kramer. very professional and funny as hell. also i would recomend creativecow.com , goto the AE section and check out the tut' , i recomend to download Ahron Rabinovich work. :)

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush,
  • Andi Rusu · 1 year ago
    Here's what works:
    -thisComp.layer("right wing").transform.yRotation

You can get this by parenting (pickwhipping) the expression to the Yrotation of the other wing. Then add - in front to mirror.
    Hope this helps.

Thank you for this tutorial. My birds however aren't flapping and I don't think I needed to go to illustrator or the first steps.
  • Luke · 1 year ago
Well, that was not bad... except my birds have two heads and are flying backwards =D But I think its just because it was my first work in AE... anyway, thanks for tutorial!
  • mediatation · 1 year ago
I think the right code line should be like this for step 7:

    -thisComp.layer("right wing").transform.yRotation
