GoMediaZine: Go Media Construction Update

  • Corbin · 1 year ago
god what an amazing office!!! it has to create a great work environment, BUT DAMN could you use some Mac's up in there hahahaha
  • Joseph Timberlake · 1 year ago
It's like the design agency cliche come to life: without the Macs.

Nice to know, even in a recession, that aquariums and glass conference walls are required...
  • Chris · 8 months ago
I guess you don't fully understand that the "recession" doesn't affect every single thing in this country and that infact there are many industries doing just as well as before it. I think you need to actually do more than devour what corperate media gives you, and research a little more before taking stabs at GoMedia for what they're doing.

Amazing work GoMedia, it's great to see you all prosper. The office looks amazing.
  • frank · 1 year ago
Let me get this right - you went from your house to this?? Wow!

I'm happy for you. This is an amazing workspace! Keep us updated, I can't wait to see the aquarium when it's up and going.

You have a GoMedia door mat?
  • JoMo · 1 year ago
Yeah that's pretty much crazy awesome.
  • WFL · 1 year ago
Thank goodness - I'm not the only modern designer using PCs (which I prefer :)). What sort of displays are you using?

Don't knock CRTs - I've had some good ones in my day that gave SUPERB color accuracy when properly calibrated, plus excellent contrast, and prefer them over LCDs when I don't have to huff em' (or pay for em') :)
  • Tim · 1 year ago
Yes, CRT's are the only monitors that can produce a true black, which is why a LOT of designers still use them. I however have migrated to the Dell 2408WFP which looks to me to be what all you guys are using (or maybe the 2407WFP), which is an amazing S-IPS monitor. I wouldn't be without mine.
  • Ryan · 1 year ago
damn that is an awesome place.
I wish i could work there.
  • Simon H. · 1 year ago

They've got a lot of nice looking setups.
  • Bill · 1 year ago
Yes! We went from my HOUSE to this building... but remember - we had 12 people crammed into my house. I was actually SHARING my desk with Adam. We were shoulder-to-shoulder. That's how packed in we were.

It took 2 YEARS to find and construct this office.

Yes - we're on PCs. :) Most of our monitors are Dell's high-end 24" monitors. Jeff and Oliver even have dual monitors! Lucky.

Yes... ordered the door mat from matsmatsmats.com. You can send them a logo and they're print it onto a mat! Fun Fun!

Everyone is LOVING the new office. And I'm glad to have my house to myself. It's the first time I've EVER had my business and home separate. !!
  • Bill Biwer · 1 year ago

The acoustics have turned out great. We were a little worried about it when we moved in, but it's been fine.

We do have a server room which I did not show you (top secret). We have a Dell Blade Server with a Power Vault 220 (with 1.1tb) set up in a RAID 5. Also on the rack is a 2TB back-up hard drive that ghosts the entire hard drive twice. Then we have an external that we back up the entire drive and keep off site. Plus we have a full collection of Disks (once a year back-up) plus any clients that are removed from the server. Finally, we mail all source files to our clients when we finish each project. Phew. I guess you could say we're obsessive about protecting our data. OH!.. almost forgot. We have massive insurance on our data. In the case of a fire or something - State Farm cuts us a huge check to cover the time it will take to rebuild our files.

Obviously... we want to protect our customers!

We had taken the glass out of the project until we found a shower enclosure company that could install it for a THIRD of the cost of our best bid. Yes, that's a shower door that goes into our conference room. I'm not sure what makes it better or worse than a "normal" glass door. I certainly can't tell the difference. It's real heavy-duty glass.

Sometimes at night I just sit at my desk, stare around and can't believe this is where I work. It's a joy... ...even if I have to work on a PC. :)
  • Simon H · 1 year ago
Woaw ! I'm impressed by how much the data side of the work is handled ! So are you guys hosting your own website ?
  • Jhay · 1 year ago
A dream place to be! Good job GoMedia!!

  • room122 · 1 year ago
Okay, I have to know more details on how the table top was created. Can you share a little more?
  • Wilson · 1 year ago
@Simon - Actually we do not host our websites in house. This is because of the ISP "backbone" load and security patching we don't want to worry about. We leave our web server hosting to the professionals at Softlayer and Rackspace both located in Texas. We mainly run a Linux cluster for the web and one Windows server. Our in house fileserver is Windows and we have a part-time Server Administrator and a full time developer named Dave who is also a Windows guru. I think we've reached a good balance over the years as how to best leverage vendors over our internal competencies.

You guys don't use fireworks for web-design and you don't use macs, what the hell man?
  • bill · 1 year ago
    @ David

...David, you are correct. We do not use fireworks and Macs. BUT.. last time I checked - Adobe OWNS Macromedia and Macs are running on Intel chips - just like our Dells... :)

    soooo.... I don't feel too bad. ;)

The Construction Update articles are great and a wonderful way to see a dream become reality. Two years of construction and 12 years in the making - a long time but WELL WORTH IT! You have created an amazing workspace.
We wish you and the rest of the GoMedia team the very best for 2009.
    Thanks for sharing the progress.
  • Mike · 11 months ago
All you guys do is sell vector packs and stock media? Or do you also do 'services'? I wouldn't imagine building such a big business around selling stock media, but then again, you seem to be 'leading' cool brand around it!
  • Bill · 11 months ago
    Mike,

This is a common misconception. Our stock vector and design resources are just a side business. We absolutely do graphic design! That's what the company was built on.

    Our primary website is: www.gomedia.us

You can see lots of samples of our design work there. That's what we're doing most of the time.

The design resources side of our business kind of grew out of the fact that we had compiled a huge database of vector art. WE used it regularly, and thought other designers could benefit from it too. So... we put up the store.

    Thanks for asking.
